Simba has a very sensitive stomach. One of the things that destroys her digestion is raw hide. Although she loves raw hide, it does not like her. It tends to constipate her which ends up in severe hemorrhoids. I found a doggy health food store this weekend in Hagerstown, MD. I asked the woman working there about the raw hide. She explained that many dogs can’t digest raw hide because it pretty much leather. She suggested pig’s ear. She carried roasted and unroasted pig ears. She beleived that the unroasted would digest easier. They were huge, alomst 10″ across. She also carried another product that looked like jerkey sticks. They were on the expensive side. One stick about 10′ long, 1/4″ thick ran about $6.00. She stated that these were also very easy to digest. I picked one up to get a closer look at it when she informed me that it was made of the bull’s penis. Ewe! I don’t think I can watch Simba enjoy chewing on a penis. Needless to say, I opted for the pig ear. She was excited about her new treat when I got home. She pranced around the house showing it off for a while before she began munching. Although the pig ear was easy to digest, she did get diarreah for two days. Maybe next time I should give her half at a time. I’m not sure how I would cut it. It would take some heavy duty scissors or may I can use my scroll saw. I am happy to know that pig ears seem to fair better as a periodic special treat.
